Father of Night

The closing track of New Morning, a short piano hymn also written for Archibald MacLeish's play Scratch; Manfred Mann's Earth Band later recorded an extended version.

The words

A brief, intense prayer praising God as the maker of night and day, of love and of the whole natural world.

The song is a hymn of praise addressed directly to God, naming him as the creator of the darkness, the seasons and the things of the earth. It draws on the shape of Jewish and Christian prayer, piling up images of creation in a steady chant. Dylan sings it over his own rolling piano with backing singers, and it lasts only about a minute and a half. It ends New Morning on a note of devotion.
