A traditional spiritual, also sung as Keep Your Hand on the Plow, given a fast, raucous treatment on Dylan's first album.
The words
A short, driving spiritual urging the faithful to keep working toward heaven and not look back.
A gospel song about perseverance: the believer is told to keep going, hold steady and stay fixed on the reward ahead. It draws on Bible stories in quick verses around a repeated call to hold on. Dylan turns it into a breathless, under-two-minute burst of guitar and harmonica, closer in spirit to a hoedown than a church hymn.
