Lily of the West

A traditional folk ballad, recorded during the 1970 sessions that produced Self Portrait and New Morning.

The words

An old ballad of a man undone by a woman he loved.

An old ballad told by a man looking back on his ruin. He travels to a new town, falls hard for a beautiful woman, and believes she returns his love, until he finds her with another man. In a jealous rage he attacks his rival and ends up tried and locked away. The striking turn is that, even after her betrayal has cost him his freedom, he still cannot stop loving her, and the tale closes on that helpless devotion.
