Where Are You Tonight? (Journey Through Dark Heat)

The closing track of Street-Legal, a long, dense song that ends the album on a note of hard-won survival.

The words

A man searching for a lost lover through a dark, dreamlike night comes out the other side changed.

The narrator travels through a shadowy landscape of strange figures and painful memories, all the while calling out to a woman who is gone. The verses tumble forward in crowded, symbolic images of struggle and temptation, until near the end he finds he has broken through his ordeal and is free of it, though still without her. The tone moves from anguish to a kind of fierce relief. The full band, horns and singers drive it with urgency.
