He had turned down the chance to play Woodstock, near his own home, a few weeks earlier, so the British show carried huge expectations. A very large crowd came, and members of the Beatles were among those who watched. He performed for about an hour, dressed in a white suit, singing in the softer, smoother voice of his recent Nashville Skyline and reworking older songs in country style. Some critics and fans who had waited years were disappointed by the short, mellow set; others found it warm and relaxed. A few of the performances appeared on Self Portrait in 1970, and the full concert was released decades later as part of the Bootleg Series. It was his last major concert before the Band tour of 1974.
