Older songs return to the set
In November 1980 he returned to the Warfield for shows that brought some of his older songs back alongside the gospel material.
No photograph or film of it is free to use; this card stands in for one.
A year after the gospel-only concerts, he came back to the same San Francisco theater with a different idea of what a show could hold. The religious songs were still there, but now they shared the stage with older material, some of it rearranged, and with new songs pointing toward his next record. Guests sat in on several nights; one was Mike Bloomfield, the guitarist from his 1965 electric sessions, who joined him for a couple of songs only months before his own death. The change showed that the strictest phase of his gospel years was easing. The album that followed in 1981, Shot of Love, mixed faith with other subjects, and from then on his concerts drew freely on every part of his catalog again.
