Live Aid was a two-continent benefit for famine relief in Ethiopia, broadcast around the world from London and Philadelphia. Dylan was placed near the end of the American show, playing acoustic guitar with Richards and Wood beside him. The set was rough: the three could barely hear themselves while preparations for the finale went on behind the curtain, and guitar strings gave trouble. Many viewers remembered it as a ragged moment on a huge stage. Yet one passing remark mattered more than the music. He suggested from the stage that some of the money might help American farmers losing their land to debt. Willie Nelson, Neil Young and John Mellencamp took up the idea, and the first Farm Aid concert was held that September, an event that has continued ever since.
