Shadow Kingdom stream

With live concerts halted by the pandemic, he made a film instead of a tour. Directed by Alma Har'el and shot in black and white, it placed him in a smoky, imagined nightclub, with a small band of masked musicians and an audience of extras who drank and smoked at tables. Most of the songs came from the 1960s and 1970s, slowed down, rearranged and sung in the rough, close voice of his later years, so that familiar material sounded freshly made. The event was sold as a paid online stream and surprised viewers who had expected an ordinary concert film. Later it emerged that the music on the soundtrack had been played by different musicians than those on screen. A soundtrack album appeared in 2023, and by late 2021 he was back on the road.
