"Murder Most Foul" released

In March 2020, early in the pandemic, he released a seventeen-minute song about the Kennedy assassination without warning, his first new original song in eight years.

He posted the song at midnight with a short note thanking fans and wishing them safety, and it arrived as many people were first sheltering at home. Built on soft piano, violin and light percussion, it unfolds slowly over seventeen minutes, its spoken-sung verses moving from the shooting in Dallas into a long roll call of songs, films and performers from American culture. Nothing like it had come from him in years, and it drew enormous attention and praise. Two more new songs followed in the next weeks, and in June he released Rough and Rowdy Ways, his first album of original songs since Tempest in 2012. The long track filled a disc of its own as the album's closer, and the record was greeted as one of his strongest late works.
