Clean Cut Kid

A Dylan original first tried during the Infidels sessions and finished for Empire Burlesque, a sardonic rocker about a young American soldier of the Vietnam era.

The words

An ordinary, all-American boy is sent to war and comes home a broken stranger whom no one understands.

The song tells the story of a polite, wholesome young man who did everything his country asked and was sent to fight in Vietnam. On his return he is lost and violent, and the people around him cannot see how the nice boy they knew became this. Dylan tells it with bitter, black humour, piling up ironic details instead of preaching. The music is a fast, rowdy rock shuffle whose cheer sharpens the sting of the story.
