Gates of Eden

A long acoustic song of surreal images, it was the B-side of the single Like a Rolling Stone.

The words

A dreamlike set of scenes contrasting the false promises of the world with a paradise where those things vanish.

The song moves through a series of strange, dreamlike scenes full of kings, soldiers, preachers, lovers and lost travelers. Each verse sets the confusion, greed and false promises of the world against a paradise where none of those things exist. In the last verse the singer's lover tells him her dreams, and he chooses not to explain them. It is solemn and hypnotic, a long solo performance for voice, guitar and harmonica.
