World Gone Wrong · 1993

Jack‐a‐Roe

An old ballad, also known as Jackaroe, that Joan Baez and the Grateful Dead also recorded; it is the second-to-last track on World Gone Wrong.

The words

A wealthy merchant's daughter disguises herself as a man and follows her sweetheart to war.

A ballad about a rich young woman whose sweetheart is sent off to war against her parents' wishes. She dresses as a man, enlists under a false name and goes after him, finding him wounded on the battlefield and nursing him back to health before they marry. Dylan tells the story briskly and plainly, sounding like a storyteller passing on something old.
