A comic travelling song from the 1967 Woodstock sessions with the Band, first officially released on The Basement Tapes in 1975.
The words
A restless traveller hops from town to town, meeting strange people and leaving each place with a shout.
A man tells the story of a rambling journey from city to city, each stop bringing an odd encounter or a small comic misfortune. He moves on every time, never settling, and the chorus bursts in with a loud, exclaiming refrain. The song is playful and absurd, more a tall tale than a confession. The Band's rolling rhythm and harmony voices on the chorus make it feel like a group singalong.
