Simple Twist of Fate

It was recorded at the original New York sessions in September 1974.

The words

A brief encounter with a woman ends when she leaves, and he is left blaming chance.

The song begins in the third person, following a couple who meet one evening, walk together and spend the night in a cheap hotel. When he wakes she has gone, and he searches for her along the waterfront, hoping she will come back. In the last verse the voice shifts into the first person, revealing that the story is his own. Each verse ends by blaming chance for what happened, and the tone is sad and resigned.
