A Dylan blues performed by the Band without him on the 1975 release of The Basement Tapes.
The words
A desperate man pleads with a telephone operator to put his call through to the woman he loves.
This is the Band's recording of a Dylan song: a blues in which a man begs the long distance operator to connect him. He is far from the woman he loves and growing frantic at every delay. The telephone becomes a picture of the distance between them. The Band gives it a heavy electric blues sound, with a raw, pleading vocal.
