Written by Gordon Jenkins with words by Johnny Mercer in 1934; not the Beatles song of the same name.
The words
A man away from home writes a letter to the woman he loves, filling it with small news and his longing.
The song takes the form of a letter from someone separated from his partner, passing on everyday details about how he is getting on before coming to the real point at the end. Its charm lies in that homely, chatty tone, with the feeling held back until the closing line. Dylan delivers it like someone reading his own note aloud, warm and slightly shy, over a gentle arrangement.
