Why it matters

His first triple album, thirty standards in three themed sets of ten, closing out his run of American songbook records.

Triplicate came out in 2017, the year after Dylan was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, and was his first three-disc album of new recordings. He recorded it at Capitol Studios in Hollywood with his touring band, this time with more horns in the arrangements, and arranged the thirty songs into three discs of ten, each given its own title and loosely following a mood. Some of the songs had been recorded by Frank Sinatra, while others reach wider across the American songbook, including "Stormy Weather" and "As Time Goes By". The playing is again gentle and unhurried, and Dylan's voice is patient and close, though the sheer length makes the record more of a long late-night program than a statement. Reviewers admired the care and craft but many felt the project had run its course. It was the last of his standards albums before he returned to writing his own songs.
