Written by Jerome Moross and Carolyn Leigh for the 1963 film "The Cardinal" and recorded by Frank Sinatra; the third track on Shadows in the Night.
The words
A humble prayer asking God for guidance, comfort and companionship through doubt and darkness.
Unlike most songs on the album, this one is addressed to God rather than to a lover. The singer confesses to feeling lost and unworthy and asks for a guiding presence to stay close. It moves slowly and solemnly, like a hymn, with no real refrain beyond its repeated plea. Dylan's recording is hushed and spare, his voice exposed and fragile over a soft, sparse band.
