Written by Jimmy McHugh and Harold Adamson in 1937 and the title song of a 1957 Frank Sinatra album; eighth on Shadows in the Night.
The words
An abandoned lover asks where the one who left has gone and why their love came to nothing.
The singer is left alone after a lover's departure and keeps asking where that person has gone and what became of the promises they shared. It is a pure lament, built on repeated questions that get no answers. The mood is lonely and still. Dylan sings it slowly and tenderly over a hushed arrangement, letting long pauses and the drifting pedal steel fill the empty space the song describes.
