You’re a Big Girl Now

The third track on Blood on the Tracks, and one of the five songs he re-recorded in Minneapolis in December 1974 for the final album.

The words

A man tells a woman who has moved on without him that he sees her growing and wishes he could change.

A man speaks to a former lover who has grown independent and found a life without him. He admits how much the separation hurts and hints that he could become a different man if she would let him. The song moves in long, aching lines, his voice climbing high on each confession, more pleading than bitter. The Minneapolis band gives it a soft, rolling setting of acoustic guitars and organ.
