Why it matters

A second set of Sinatra-associated standards, cut with the same touring band and a slightly lighter, more romantic mood.

Fallen Angels was recorded at Capitol Studios with the same small touring band and engineer Al Schmitt as Shadows in the Night, and it came out in 2016, shortly before Dylan turned seventy-five. Again the songs are ones Frank Sinatra had sung, but the choice is wider and the mood is lighter, with more swing and more songs of romance and longing alongside the ballads. The arrangements stay spare: steel guitar, soft electric guitars, upright bass and brushed drums, with an occasional horn. Dylan's singing is relaxed and assured, and he clearly enjoys phrasing these melodies. Reviewers found it warmer and more varied than its predecessor, though some wondered how long he would stay in this territory. It confirmed that the standards project was more than a one-off experiment, and later that year he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, before returning to the same studio for a much larger set.
