He played "Gotta Serve Somebody", "I Believe in You" and "When You Gonna Wake Up", all from Slow Train Coming, the album he had made in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, with producers Jerry Wexler and Barry Beckett and Mark Knopfler on guitar. Backed by a tight band and gospel singers, he left no doubt that his new Christian faith was the subject of his music now. For a television audience used to the older Dylan, it was a striking statement. About two weeks later he began a run of shows in San Francisco where he played only his new religious songs, to some boos and walkouts. "Gotta Serve Somebody" went on to win him a Grammy, and the gospel period continued with Saved in 1980.
