Chimes of Freedom

A long visionary song, it was covered by The Byrds on their 1965 debut album.

The words

Sheltering from a storm, two people imagine the storm tolling for every outcast and underdog in the world.

Two people shelter in a doorway during a night thunderstorm, and the lightning seems to them like great bells ringing out. Each verse widens the list of those the bells ring for: the refugees, the gentle, the outcasts, the mistreated, the lonely and the misunderstood, all over the world. The refrain returns them to the simple act of watching the storm. It is long, hymn-like and visionary, sung over a steady acoustic strum.
