Its melody follows Dominic Behan's "The Patriot Game".
The words
A survey of American wars questions the habit of claiming divine approval for every killing.
A young man from the Midwest recalls what his schoolbooks taught him: that in every American war, from the fighting against Native Americans through the World Wars, his country had God on its side. Verse by verse he sees how easily enemies become friends and back again, and how the arrival of weapons of mass death makes the claim more frightening. He ends troubled and uncertain, hoping that God would stop the next war. It is a long, slow ballad for voice, guitar and harmonica.
