The Times They Are a-Changin'

Written in 1963 as a deliberate anthem, it became one of the defining songs of the 1960s.

The words

A warning to politicians, critics and parents that a new generation is coming and the old order is giving way.

The singer calls on everyone to gather round and face what is coming. Verse by verse he addresses writers and critics, senators and congressmen, and mothers and fathers, warning each not to stand in the way of change they cannot stop. The last verse declares that the order of things is about to be turned upside down. The tone is solemn and prophetic, like a hymn or a public proclamation, sung over plain guitar and harmonica.
