Crash on the Levee (Down in the Flood)

Recorded with the Band in 1967; he re-recorded it as "Down in the Flood" for Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits Vol. II in 1971.

The words

With the water rising and the levee about to break, a man warns a woman she will have to fend for herself.

A man sees a flood coming and warns that the levee is about to give way. In the middle of the disaster, he tells the woman he is with that she will need to find someone else to lean on. The flood works as both a real danger and a picture of a relationship washing away. The song is a tough, rolling blues, delivered with grim good humour over a steady beat.
