Full Moon and Empty Arms

Its melody comes from Rachmaninoff's Second Piano Concerto, and Dylan released his version a year ahead of the album.

The words

A lonely lover spends a moonlit night wishing the absent one were there.

A lover alone under a bright moon spends the night wishing the absent person were there, and turns the moonlight into a kind of promise that they will be together again. The song moves from longing toward hope, ending on a quiet wish rather than despair. Dylan sings the old standard with a small, hushed band, where gentle pedal steel takes the place of the lush strings of the classic versions.
