Hark the Herald Angels Sing

An eighteenth-century hymn with words by Charles Wesley, sung to a melody adapted from Felix Mendelssohn, it is one of the album's traditional carols.

The words

Angels announce the birth of Christ and call on every nation to join their song of praise.

This is a hymn of proclamation: the angels' message of a newborn king is relayed to the world, and the listener is asked to join in. Its verses move from the birth itself to what it means for believers, ending in joyful praise. Dylan sings it plainly and reverently, letting the choir carry much of the melody, and makes no attempt to dress up a song meant for a congregation.
