Do You Hear What I Hear?

Written in 1962 by Noël Regney and Gloria Shayne as a plea for peace during the Cuban missile crisis, it is the second track on Christmas in the Heart.

The words

News of a newborn child passes from the night wind to a lamb, a shepherd and a king, until it reaches everyone.

The song is a chain of messages: each figure hears or sees something and passes it on to the next, from the smallest creature up to a mighty ruler. It grows step by step, each verse a little grander, until the closing call is for peace and goodness for all. Dylan takes it straight and earnest, his rough voice set against a warm, old-fashioned arrangement with backing singers.
