Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts

At close to nine minutes, it is the album's longest track and one of the five songs re-recorded in Minneapolis.

The words

A western caper in which a mysterious card player's arrival in a small town sets off robbery, jealousy and a killing.

A western tale told across many verses, set in a small mining town. A stranger who seems to be the Jack of Hearts arrives at the cabaret, and his presence stirs up the showgirl Lily, the jealous wife Rosemary, and the powerful man who owns the town. While a robbery unfolds down the street, tensions in the room explode into a killing and a hanging. There is no chorus; the story simply rolls forward, and the mysterious stranger slips away at the end.
