One of Us Must Know (Sooner or Later)

Closes the first side of Blonde on Blonde and was the only track on the album recorded in New York rather than Nashville.

The words

A man explains to a former lover that he never meant to hurt her and that their whole affair was a misunderstanding.

The singer looks back on a relationship that ended badly and tries to set the record straight with the woman he hurt. He insists he did not understand her and did not mean what she took from him, while admitting she saw through him. Each verse builds to a big, pleading chorus. The sound swells from a quiet start into a crashing wall of piano, organ and drums, with Dylan straining against it.
