Visions of Johanna

Dylan first tried it in New York with the Hawks before cutting the album version in Nashville.

The words

A restless night in a cold room where the singer is with one woman but haunted by thoughts of another.

Set during a sleepless night, the song finds the singer in a room with one lover, Louise, while his mind keeps drifting to an absent woman, Johanna, who seems more vivid to him than anyone present. The verses wander out into the city and through a gallery of minor figures, then return each time to that haunting pull of memory. There is no resolution; the longing only deepens as the night wears on. The Nashville recording is hushed and drifting, with organ and harmonica adding to its late-hour mood.
