On October 16, 1992, a host of artists performed his songs at Madison Square Garden to mark thirty years since his first album, and Dylan closed the night himself.

Neil Young nicknamed the night Bobfest, and the name stuck. The bill was enormous: Stevie Wonder, Lou Reed, Johnny Cash, Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Tom Petty, Roger McGuinn and Young himself were among those who sang his songs, with Booker T. and the MG's as the house band. The evening is also remembered for Sinéad O'Connor, who was booed so loudly, weeks after a televised protest against the pope, that she abandoned her planned song. Dylan came out at the end, played alone for a few songs, then led an all-star group through a couple of his classics. The concert was released as an album and video the following year. Its broad roster showed how deeply his songs had spread through every corner of popular music over three decades.
