The Christmas Song

Written in 1945 by Mel Tormé and Bob Wells and made famous by Nat King Cole, it is the penultimate track on Christmas in the Heart.

The words

Familiar winter comforts and children's excitement make up a simple, warm wish for a merry Christmas.

The song is a string of cozy images: roasting chestnuts, carols, decorations and children waiting for Santa, rounded off with a wish that everyone has a good holiday. It is unhurried and intimate, more a mood than a story. Dylan sings it slowly over a soft jazz-tinged arrangement, and his cracked voice gives a song associated with velvet crooners a more fragile, human sound.
