In November 1965 Dylan quietly married Sara Lownds, a former model, in a private ceremony on Long Island.

Sara had a young daughter, Maria, from her first marriage, whom Dylan later adopted. The wedding was kept so quiet that the press did not learn of it for months. The couple had four more children together, including Jesse, born in early 1966, and Jakob, who later led the band the Wallflowers. After the frenzy of 1965 and 1966 they settled into family life in Woodstock, and he largely kept his private life out of view. Many listeners connect "Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands", the long closing song of Blonde on Blonde, with her, and he later wrote "Sara" for Desire. The marriage ran into trouble in the mid 1970s, and they divorced in 1977.
