Dylan wrote it for the French director Olivier Dahan's film My Own Love Song, which led to the whole album.
The words
A lonely man drifts through his days missing someone and finding the world harder to bear alone.
A lonely man moves through his days without the person he lost, and everything around him feels heavier for her absence. The verses are quiet and plain, describing evenings, memories and a resolve to keep going even though the world has grown harder to face alone. There is no dramatic turn, only a steady, resigned tenderness. Dylan croons it softly as a slow ballad, closer to an old-fashioned love song than to the bluesier tracks around it.
