My Wife's Home Town

Written with Robert Hunter and credited also to Willie Dixon, since it is built on his blues "I Just Want to Make Love to You".

The words

A man grumbles, half in jest, that his wife's home town is the root of all his troubles.

The singer complains about the place his wife comes from, blaming it for everything that goes wrong and casting it as something close to hell. The humor is dark and deadpan, a classic blues grievance played for laughs and menace at once. It moves on a slow, heavy Chicago blues riff, with accordion and growling guitar, and Dylan delivers it with a gruff, sly relish.
